What are the best audio processing plugins?

Audio engineers, music producers, DJ's, re-mixers, you name it we all rely on software plugins to give us that polished sound. In today's music production environment there are questions we must ask and choices we must make. What plugin format does my DAW require? What plugins should I invest in? What plugins will compliment my workflow? What plugin does (insertnamehere) producer use to get those phat beats? and the list goes on. Plugins come in many different shapes and sizes.

The first and probably most important question is what plugin format does my DAW require? Today's popular plugin formats include TDM, RTAS, VST, CoreAudio, MAS and DirectX. The majority of my work is performed in Pro Tools on both LE and HD systems so I use TDM, RTAS and VST plugins. I should mention that in order to use a VST plugin with Pro Tools you need the VST>RTAS wrapper from FXpansion. Today I present the top 10 plugins I use on every production session in no particular order.

Izotope Ozone 4 Mastering Suite

Ozone 4 combines seven essential mastering processors into one complete system, letting you give your mixes a finished, full and professional sound. Ozone's critically acclaimed IRC™ Loudness Maximizer gives you commercial volume and fullness without distorting or coloring your mix. An eight band Paragraphic EQ combines linear phase precision with the warmth and character of analog equalizers and even lets you intelligently match your mix to reference tracks. Innovative Multiband Dynamics, Harmonic Exciter and Stereo Imaging tools add depth and polish.

Waves Renaissance Bass

Renaissance Bass delivers Waves patented MaxxBass® psycho-acoustic technology using simplified controls for quick, intuitive operation. You can specify the frequency cutoff point where the process begins, the Intensity of the artificial harmonics added to the signal, and output attenuation. There's also a button to choose whether the original bass frequencies below the cutoff point are retained or discarded. Again, Renaissance Bass works surprisingly well despite its apparent inflexibility.

The SSL 4000 Collection includes four meticulously modeled plugins based on the legendary SSL 4000 Series: the SSL E-Channel, the SSL G-Master Buss Compressor, the SSL G-Equalizer and the all-new G-Channel. These plugins sound so close to the original consoles, even experts who work with SSL boards day in and day out can’t tell the difference.

I use it on every project. Stay tuned for a complete review including video tutorials.

Eric Darius is On A Mission

With 24 musicians, five producers and eight studios from Canada to Jamaica! Mixing up the flavors of hip hop, fusion, acid jazz, straight-up funk and R&B into a melodic concoction of scrumptious delectable sonic treats. Danny Weiss, VP of Jazz A&R for Shanachie states, “If you think of jazz as a wonderful tree whose trunk is its great tradition and whose branches are the never ending innovations of its young disciples, then Eric Darius is the newest branch of that tree. He can swing like the masters and funk like a hip-hopper; truly the blossoming of tomorrow’s jazz.”

“I want my music to be a vehicle for change and to transcend boundaries from age to race. I believe my music can make a difference in the world.”

His unbridled passion can be heard on the song “Let’s Go,” which he co-wrote with producer and keyboardist Micah Otano and Mike Barkulis (in fact four of the ten songs on the CD were co-written with Otano and Barkulis). With amplified rock guitars and thumping bass lines, R&B vocals and a hip hip hook, the groove-happy “Let’s Go” sounds like a ready-made top 40 R&B hit. Darius and Otano collaborated with one another on Eric’s last recording and first met while on tour with Brian Culbertson. “I think that Micah and I are a perfect match, because we both come from the same place musically. We both have an understanding and appreciation for all genres of music and like to push musical boundaries.”

With its massive sound, hands-on ease, and affordable price, the GAIA SH-01 is a high-performance value with old-school charm. The triple-stacked engine puts potent virtual analog synthesis under your fingertips, yet the control panel is so fun, friendly, and inviting, even first-timers can create great sounds. The signal flow is simple to grasp, with logically arranged knobs, sliders, and buttons. Hands-on control and fat sound make this little powerhouse a joy for music students, songwriters, session players, and live performers of all styles and skill levels.

Huge sound with three virtual analog engines onboard, each with a dedicated oscillator, filter, amplifier, envelope, and LFO

Layer up to five simultaneous effects, including distortion, flanger, delay, reverb, low boost, and more

64-voice polyphony for massive sounds without note drop-out

Fun, hands-on control panel that’s great for instant gratification, and for learning synthesis

Lightweight, compact body with 37 full-size keys

Runs on AC or battery power for portable convenience

D Beam, arpeggiator, and Phrase Recorder onboard

USB ports for saving user patches to USB flash drives, and for audio/MIDI connection to computers

Triple-Fat Virtual Analog

Sink your teeth into the new triple-stacked virtual analog engine, comprising three complete synths for incredibly thick, powerful sound. Unleash the beef of three oscillators that drive a trio of multimode, resonant filters, multi-shape LFOs, and amplifiers, plus nine envelope generators. It’s like having three synthesizers in one! With 64 polyphonic voices onboard, the GAIA SH-01 makes it possible to play massive sounds without experiencing note drop-out.

Stackable Effects

From the silkiest reverb to the grittiest growl, the SH-01′s instantly selectable multi-effects will catapult your sounds into another spatial dimension. You can layer up to five simultaneous effects for dozens of variations. The onboard effects include reverb, distortion, fuzz, bit crash, flanger, phaser, pitch shifter, low boost, and delay with panning and tempo sync. Dedicated control knobs are provided for tweaking the effects in real time.

Portable Power

At less than 10 pounds (approx. 4 kg / 9 lbs), the GAIA SH-01 is lightweight, compact, and great for musicians on the go. The 37-note keyboard is full-size, however, so performers can play naturally and comfortably. The synth can be powered via AC or batteries* for the ultimate in portable convenience. A battery-life indicator on the front panel ensures that you won’t lose power unexpectedly. When used in conjunction with a battery-powered amp such as Roland’s CUBE Street, MOBILE CUBE, BA-330 or KC-110, the GAIA SH-01 can be played and heard anywhere!
*Can be powered by eight rechargeable Ni-MH AA batteries.

Instant Control

The front panel puts every control directly under your fingertips. There are no hidden menus, no nonsense. Just play and move the knobs and sliders, or wave your hands over the invisible D Beam for dramatic effects. The logically designed front panel shows the signal path from left to right. It helps beginners understand synthesis, while experienced players will love the instant gratification of hands-on control during performance.

Phrase Recorder and Arpeggiator

Hold a note or chord and let the arpeggiator create musical magic automatically for you. The tempo can be set via tap tempo. In addition, the onboard Phrase Recorder lets you record what you play on the keyboard as well as the movements of the knobs and sliders. The controller data can also be played back independently to complement the notes you play in real time.

USB and EXT IN

Connect directly to a computer (Mac or PC) with one simple USB cable, and stream audio directly to the software of your choice. The SH-01′s USB ports can also be used to transmit and receive MIDI data, and to store your patches and phrases (recorded with the Phrase Recorder) to a USB flash memory. For integrating with external devices, the SH-01′s EXT input lets you connect external audio sources such as an MP3-player and play along with your favorite songs or backing tracks – great for practice and live performance. Manipulate the incoming audio with three Center Cancel modes, which let you eliminate pre-recorded vocals, guitars, or bass.

Yes that’s right you read that correctly. When you visit your local Musical Instruments equipped Best Buy you will now be able to grab some Waves plugs and beef up your DAW’s processing power.
Waves has grown into the world’s leading developer and supplier of software-based audio signal processing tools, while expanding to meet the demand for Waves processing in hardware-based products. Waves’ current product line has increased to over 60 processors that have been embraced by the audio industry in music production, film, post, and broadcast. In fact, the name Waves itself has become synonymous with top-of-the -line audio processing, and the company’s products are used where superior quality is a pre-requisite: hit records, major motion pictures, and top-selling games worldwide.

If you’ve never had the chance to visit the NAMM Show, it’s a musician’s (and engineers) paradise, with thousands of exhibitors, live product demos, super fresh jam sessions, and celebrity appearances galore!

Themed “Get Ready,” the trade show offered attendees the opportunity to reunite with industry peers, learn the latest business and marketing tactics and trends at daily NAMM University sessions, and ultimately make their biggest business deals for the year ahead. The trade show is only open to industry members and their invited guests, and draws the convention center’s highest annual attendance. Last year, NAMM reported a total of 85,799 of registrants, including 1,505 exhibitors. This year, NAMM reported 87,569 registrants, a 2 percent increase from last year.

This year I was part of that 2% increase thanks to my good friends at Odyssey and this is my tasty NAMM experience all wrapped up like a spicy scallop hand roll.

“The 2010 NAMM Show is the go-to event of the year for serious music and sound product professionals from around the globe,” said NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond. “They will benefit from their NAMM Show experience by networking with their peers, getting the first look at the best new products for the year ahead, and by experiencing the music, concerts and parties that set NAMM apart from every other show in the world.”

The trade-only event features more than 1,500 manufacturers’ exhibits with many product launches that gather crowds to see the newest, most innovative products from all musical categories.

“This year’s NAMM Show marks a critical turning point for the international music products industry,” said NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond. “A strong NAMM Show signals the beginning of a comeback with buyers returning to their hometowns with renewed energy, passion and hope for a strong 2010, and exhibitors enjoying strong floor traffic and sales as they introduced hundreds of new and innovative products to the market.”

There were high-energy events featuring Quincy Jones and Yoko Ono, who spoke on behalf of the importance of music education for children.

The 2010 NAMM Show will draw nearly 1,500 exhibiting companies, and is expected to generate more than $70 million for the Orange County business community. Speaking of 1,500 exhibiting companies, let’s get to the good stuff. So this was my first year attending the NAMM Show in person and for an audio gear fanatic like myself it was (at first) a little overwhelming. It was like the feeling I had when I was a little kid at Toy’s ‘R’ Us. There is so much good stuff that your brain is being pulled in 20 different directions. Here are a few pieces of kit that really caught my attention.

Access Virus OS 4 Announced
Access announced the next operating system for the entire Virus TI series of synthesizers.

Six meticulously modeled overdrive stomp boxes greatly complement with the existing arsenal of distortion algorithms in the effect section.

The new speaker cabinet emulation is a fantastic and easy-to-use toolkit to add further character; especially to roaring acid lead and sync sounds. You like retro style? Our new Vowel filter will be your best friend, offering a sonic pallet from Talk Box to WahWah sounds.
The Comb filter puts the metallic shine on your patches known from many glitch and progressive tracks. And The new arpeggiator allows you to modulate any of the parameters available to the modulation matrix.

OS4 will become available shorty and is a free update for all Virus TI users.

Overdrive Stomp Boxes

OS4 for the entire Virus TI line of synthesizers brings 6 more distortion flavors to the table, modeled on vintage guitar distortion pedals. Every one of these classic pedals is famous for its distinctive character and has been exploited by some of the greatest guitar heroes of all time. The virtual stomp boxes feature carefully modeled distortion curves and tonal characteristics and include tone controls where appropriate.

Mint Overdrive – The sound of this one just screams tubes – a very special kind of overdrive which results in a wonderful smokey tone. Good for achieving a subtle distortion effect whilst still retaining headroom for dynamics.
Curry Overdrive – A more extreme distortion, like in the original, this does not feature a Tone control.
Saffron Overdrive - The ʻorangeʼ one. A very harsh distortion, popular with the grunge movement.
Onion Overdrive – A big distortion effect famous for its fuzzy character.
Pepper Overdrive - A clear, powerful distortion thatʼs perfect for making leads cut right through the mix. Tone control to soften sound with a lowpass filter.
Chili Overdrive - A classic “fuzzbox” overdrive. No tone control, just in-your-face fuzz.

In this video Ben Crosland explains some of the new features!

I think we can all agree that KaossPads in any shape or form are hella tight!

Now for those of you who have an audio interface with an open ADAT port this next unit is a surefire way to expand your I/O capabilities. The Focusrite OctoPre MkII DYNAMIC features eight channels of Focusrite’s legendary mic preamplification, with new, single-dial, VCA-based compressors derived from the classic Focusrite Red 3 on every channel.

On-board digital converters, with state-of-the-art clocking and jitter-elimination technology, enable you to stream eight channels of 24-bit/96kHz digital audio to and from an ADAT-equipped computer workstation or hard disk recorder. This makes it the perfect addition to your project studio setup or live recording rig, including those running Pro Tools M-Powered, LE and HD, as well as the likes of Logic, Cubase, Sonar and Digital Performer.

Those are a few of the goodies that really caught my attention. My first NAMM experience was amazing to say the least. I’m always amazed at the new technology that comes out every year. Music production and recording technology has come a long way and I can wait to see what the future holds.

Keep it Icy!
